Der brasilianische Film boomt! In seiner Sektion „Première Brasil“ zeigt das Festival do Rio die besten heimischen Produktionen des Jahres. Eine Auswahl der letzten beiden Ausgaben ist am HKW zu sehen, kuratiert von Festivalleiterin Ilda Santiago persönlich.
Die Bandbreite der Sujets ist groß: von der Kunst, aus Müll Häuser zu bauen, über den undurchdringlich lähmenden Nebel des Hinterlandes bis zu einem Psychothriller mit tödlichen Nachbarn. Und dazu ein Rückblick auf Brasilien, das Land der Zukunft, als das es in den 50er-Jahren galt: Dokumentationen über Oscar Niemeyer, Affonso Eduardo Reidy, Lúcio Costa, die Architekten von Rio de Janeiro und der Hauptstadt Brasilia – einer Realität gewordenen Utopie, die heute eher eine Illusion zu sein scheint. Publikumsgespräche mit Ilda Santiago und den Regisseuren erlauben einen Einblick in die aktuelle Szene, von etablierten Könnern wie Karim Aïnouz bis hin zu vielversprechenden Talenten wie Esmir Filho.

The Brazilian film industry is booming! In the section "Première Brasil”, the Festival do Rio is screening the best domestic productions of the year. Curated personally by festival director Ilda Santiago, a selection from the previous two years is available for viewing at the HKW.
The program offers a wide range of subjects: from the art of making houses out of garbage, to the fog of the hinterland, to a psychological thriller about deadly neighbors. And a retrospective look at Brazil, ‘the land of the future’ as they called it in the fifties: documentaries about Oscar Niemeyer, Affonso Eduardo Reidy, Lucio Costa, the architects of Rio de Janeiro and the capital Brasilia – ‘a utopia turned reality’, which from today’s perspective seems little more than illusion. Public talks with Ilda Santiago and the directors offer insights into present day Brazil, participants include renowned experts, such as Karim Aïnouz, and promising young talents, such as Esmir Filho.
